Employment hiring decisions

One of most interesting things Ray and Ron mentioned was how their core staff was selected. They knew they had to be extremely careful in picking their first few; however, Ron mentioned that they never even met them till well into the project. All fo the hiring was done online. I am not a computer science major where this many be the norm of hiring people with tech skills in that department, but as far as I'm concerned a face to face interview is almost a necessity especially in cases for start-ups. Now, the way I inferred Ron's statements was that they probably talked and may be had a few conferences; however, I would like to know how carefully the staff was chosen and how much input did everyone have on the decisions. Also, how does this online hiring affect the working environment. People who work in an office come to work as a team more efficiently because of the social aspect of the workplace due to co-location. How does this work when team members are not only far from each other, but never even met.

Re: Employment hiring decisions

Having participated in a failed attempt at starting up a company with partners whom I only had virtual contact with, I can appreciate the importance of face-to-face interactions in developing a team atmosphere and cohesive vision. That said, any employee of a web based company must possess a certain sophisticated appreciation of the internet and other virtual mediums. How better to measure this, then to conduct all initial interactions in a virtual domain. Personality may be important for a company like PodShow, but the ability to effectively communicate and persuade others while being restricted to a virtual platform seems like a much more desirable attribute. Also, given the always-connected society we now live in, it is much more feasible and perhaps necessary to coordinate and conduct day-to-day operations remotely.
