Inspiration
Peter Diamandis reminds me of a child with a tremendously wild imagination, except this child has the funding to do exactly what he wants to do. It is incredibly amazing how Peter is able to convince people to fund prizes of competitions that may seem absurd to the typical normal person. It just shows that as long as one can be as passionate about what he/she does and does not give up, anything is possible. I feel Diamandis’s method of pushing technology and intelligence using prizes is genius.

Re: Inspiration
Agreed. And also the way he generates ideas is emblematic of his wild imagination. One part of the talk that I particularly enjoyed was this discussion of how he originates his start-up ideas. In particular the idea about how to start XPrize came to him as he was reading a book about the crossing of the Atlantic for a prize. At the same time, what is remarkable is not that these ideas come to him but that he has the skills to turn such great ideas into great companies.

Re: Inspiration
I think that he is an unstoppable entrepreneur mainly because he believed so much in himself. He was able to accumulate so much funding and donations because he is passionate about his goals, thereby drawing others into this same excited state. His amiability and people skills are characteristics that have made him so successful.
One thing I learned is to never stop trying, and also not to doubt yourself. Others will be willing to help you.

Re: Inspiration
Nothing inspires us more than success against great odds. People like Peter Diamandis are living example of this. His innovative thinking has made him somebody who thinks outside the box and enables great revolutionary change. He has created a marketplace where the financial model is based on prizes. It’s a model that may not work in across the board. But this works well for challenges where the odds are stacked against you and a conventional VC would see no justification to fund you. Peter’s success and passion drive home the message to never give up. To see him as the incubator for not one, but so many ideas that border on science fiction is inspiration indeed.

Re: Inspiration
I was amazed by his confidence in making the announcement for the $10 Million X-Prize without raising a dollar. It puts some weight on the concept of self-realized goals. He started something with only a dream It became reality when he made the announcement. He has not been pushed back by culture or economics and does not feel threatened by failure. He just pushes forward. It was a very inspirational speech and truly represented the entrepreneurial spirit.

Re: Inspiration
I agree, his ability to execute on his dreams and passions was very inspirational. His motto that "the best way to predict the future is to invent it" not only embodies the entrepreneurial spirit, but also the inventor's spirit. I believe that this is particularly true in the tech industry where the future is really defined by the inventive people who engineer new products.

Re: Inspiration
I find it remarkable how many interesting ideas originate from reading biographies - the X Prize included. There is a lot we can learn from past innovations and entrepreneurs who have gone before, which is part of what makes ETL so great! Let's keep the fresh ideas flowing.

Re: Inspiration
I also agree. IT is pretty amazing and inspirational the Peter Diamond has had the imagination to think up all these things and the courage to make them happen in the face of logic and reasonability. I wold expect he has met so many people that have told him that these things arent possible but kept his dreams alive. This is remarkable!

Re: Inspiration
This lecture was amazing in how inspirational it was - I came out of that fired up to be an Electrical or Mechanical Engineering major just so I could contribute in the X Prize competition. The use of competitions to generate not only new cutting-edge technologies (and getting brains from all over the globe to do so), but also get revenue from huge corporations in such a way that you're almost doing them a favor is ingenious.

Re: Inspiration
The inspirational messages that Peter Diamandis was able to instill on us ultimately trace back to his passion, as many have noted. It is remarkable how he has "incentivized innovation” and I found it interesting that he attributes his motivation to the following motto—what does the public think is impossible, until it is done? I truly enjoyed sitting in the audience for this talk, and I took the best piece of advice to be “go back to what you loved when you were a kid.” Indeed, if you are passionate about something you will genuinely love what you are doing.

Re: Inspiration
I agree with all of the comments in this link. Peter Diamandis's story was very inspirational. Growing up I always had dreams of going on sub-orbital adventures. It is very inspiritational to see one takes this idea from being a mere dream to reality. Having talked to Anousheh Ansar ( the X-prize sponsor) in person, it is amazing to see how two very determined enterpreneurs who are not afraid to think outside the box, make a wild dream become reality.

Re: Inspiration
Yes, I believe passion is very important. Peter Diamondis is a very good example of how passion helps people successful, which is same to all these heroes in silicon valley. Sometimes the ideas even seems to be ridiculous could be turned to be a really great one. For example, Google. Many people think Yahoo is already there, why we need Google.
