how to improve your company

the speaker emphasized on the fact that there is a sweetspot for the time as to when one wants to start a company and that is when you have the least responsibilities in terms of involvement in different areas whether personal or economical. That said, you should also be careful not to fall on the other side in the sense that you rush the school and hurriedly want to start company without thought.

Re: how to improve your company

It does seem like a difficult balance to strike: we can obviously take more risk when we are younger, but that comes with the cost of less experience.  I liked his comment that he's just working longer hours (less efficiently) than someone older would probably work.  Probably the smartest he did, from my perspective, was thinking of the MS website originally as a side project.  Thus, he took it as far as possible without closing any other doors.  Another great piece of advice was using your resources: faculty, friends, angel investors.  These people understand starting a compnay far better than any of us.

Re: how to improve your company

Should I start a company and, if so, when?  This seems to be the million dollar question; one that we've all probably considered.  Of course, there's not a one-size-fits-all answer here; there are too many factors that influence if an idea will succeed or fail and if an entrepreneur will succeed or fail.  That said, I liked Armen's notion of a "sweetspot" for each individual and that effort and experience are fungible.

Re: how to improve your company

I disagree with Armen's idea that when starting a company each individual has a "sweetspot", i.e. a certain time in one's life when he is best suited to start a company. You can start a company when you're still in school, when you're in the workforce, or when you're "retired". I believe the quality of the idea that the company is founded on dictates the company's success. If you truly have a great idea then it will succeed no matter what age you are. You might be more business savvy or have a broader network when you are older, which might help speed up the process, but I believe the end result will be the same no matter what age you are.

Re: how to improve your company

I spent considerable amount of time thinking about whether such thing as a "sweetspot" exists.  Is it the timing or the strength of leadership that dictates whether the company would be successful?  I agree with Armen that there is a time in a person's life that they need to feel confident to be able to start a company.  Otherwise, you'll just burn yourself and your money out.
